Darfur

I did a research paper on the current crisis in Darfur recently, and what I found out really opened my eyes. The situation, which garners zero media as of now, is the worst humanitarian crisis in our world at the moment. Darfur, a region in Western Sudan, is currently embroiled in one of longest civil wars to this date. Since gaining independence in 1956, Sudan has been in a civil war for all but 11 years. Millions have died due to fighting, starvation, drought, and disease. Sudan is one of the poorest countries, and the region of darfur lacks the necessary infrastructure to support the people, especially with the war going on. Now I could write a book about what is happening because the amount of information out there is immense. I'm not here to tell you all of the details about this, but what I would like to say is that the people of Darfur need support from our global community. Here in the U.S., the crisis was touched upon briefly, but has since faded from the media. It is up to us as global citizens to help support the humanitarian efforts being undertaken by groups such as Amnesty International, and Save Darfur. There are numerous ways you can contribute, whether donating time or money, spreading the word, signing petitions, or contacting your representatives. If we continue to ignore this crisis, which is genocidal, then the promise echoed after the Holocaust, "Never Again", will be hollow.
